Anyone out there with husbands/fathers/brothers who hunt? If not, this is possibly the least favorite project you’ll see on my site. That said, I’m really excited I finished these two custom gun sleeves for my dad.
My dad is a huge pheasant hunter, and hunter in general. He grew up on a farm just outside Lake City, Minnesota. I hear lots of crazy stories about his family life and growing up on the farm. As well as a lot of old hunting stories. Really, you wouldn’t believe some of the stories, they’re amazing and funny, and I don’t ever get sick of hearing them.
He gave me a few pictures and measurments of a vintage gun sleeve that he really liked. I told him I’d give it a shot and it ended up pretty great. I made my own pattern and it’s basically just a mini quilt. I used a canvas for the exterior with a homespun cotton for the lining and cotton batting in the middle. Finished it off with some store bought binding and a couple wooden buttons.
The Winchester logo is a freezer paper stencil. Glad I had read Elsie Marley’s post about her freezer paper skirt (which by the way is such a beautiful skirt). I reused the freezer paper and ironed it on a second time for the other gun sleeve, nice time saver, thanks Meg.
Now he’ll be the envy of the gun club.
I myself do not hunt (Although my dad and hubby have been known too), but I still love the projects because it was instant reminder of Supernatural. I ♥ the Winchester boys!
what a good daughter!
Wow! They really look amazing!
Although he isn’t a hunter, my hubs is big on guns. This is a great idea to file away for the future when I want to make a (very unexpected!) gift for him! :o)
That is funny because my shot gun is a winchester and has a similar gun pouch and I have been thinking about making a cool funky girly pouch for it!
I would love a pattern for this. My husband has inherited his father’s muzzle loaders and they really could use a nicer covering but I’m clueless where to start, if you had basic directions (hint, hint) I could probably take it from there.
Very cool
all the other hunters will be so jealous! 😉 you’re awesome for making it up as you go!
Great job Anna! I love a good man project. My husband is quite the arms-lover himself, so now you’ve got me thinking . . .
i think that it came out great. my hubby would love it. he is a gun and hunting freak!
Now how cool is that!! Maybe I can trade that in for a pair of cargo pants with my son 🙂
I think they’re cute. Great job. (I get knocked for having gun subject matter in my fiber art, so I wanted to show you some support. It doesn’t mean that you’re violent and crazy.) I love everything you make, though!
I’d also love a pattern, or some semi-directions. My husband comes from a hunting family and he has lots of guns! Those covers turned out beautifully.
Hello, I’ve been a subscriber for a while and I’d like to echo previous hints/requests for a tutorial. I just recently began sewing and my husband is all about shotguns and rifles. He has a birthday coming up…
Thanks so much everyone, I’m planning on putting together a pdf of the pattern I drew and a set of basic instructions.
You are a rockstar.
