Sewing

I’ll just let you decide

No, these aren’t the beginning of a pair of crazy circus pants like my husband thought.  It’s the beginnings of a coin quilt with my first ever charm pack purchase.  I had gotten one charm pack of City Weekend by Liesl Gibson for Moda from Sew, Mama, Sew! a few weeks ago.

No idea what I wanted to make with it, just wanted it, I guess.

So I started in on a quilt to give to some baby girl somewhere in the world (really, I have no plans as to where it might be going right now).  It was fun because all the fabric came from my stash, except the binding fabric.

To be totally honest, I’m not super thrilled with it so far.  I really wanted to try and do some free motion quilting, but I chickened out.  And I also was too lazy to go get darker thread, so I’m not pleased with the quilting on it.  Oh, and I was going to do white sashing, but didn’t have enough on hand.  Hopefully I’ll be able to show you the finished product on Friday and let you decide if it’s cool or totally not.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes to my Uncle and for entering my blogiversary giveaway, can’t wait to find out who the winners will be!

I love the beginnings of this coin quilt (had never heard of these before now). I have a gorgeous Japanese Homewares shop near my house and every few months they bring import loads of gorgeous sample pieces of Vintage Kimono Fabric.. I have purchased so many pieces in the past year and yet had no idea, until now, what to do with them… I think a coin quilt is ideal!

I am looking forward to seeing the end result!

Do you happen to know where I would find a tutorial?

  2. I have completed piecing a coin quilt, it turned out very pretty, now to get it quilted! I love the colors in your coin quilt and I look forward to seeing the progression. Enjoy!

What is a coin quilt? I’m showing my lack of quilting knowledge here. I do like this though!

  4. If you don’t have plans for it already, perhaps you’d like to donate it to The Linus Project?

I love it! I am so excited about that line of fabrics! I cannot wait until you can purchase them individually by the yard!

i am just about to start my first ever quilt as my friend is having her first baby (a girl) in november. i just hope mine turns out half as nice as those.

Seriously your very first charm pack?!!! Girl, you have some catching up to do!! 🙂 🙂 My first reaction to these strips was not crazy pants but they reminded me of the Wicked Witch of the East’s stockings sticking out from under Dorothy’s old house …. lol I bet it will look wonderful. I too just attempted to make due with my stash and a charm pack for a small quilt last week. I ended up filling a lot of “dead” space with applique. Please take a look at it on my blog at why-knot-kwilt.blogspot.com and tell me what you think. I did all-over quilting … but am still in the learning stages of the longarm, so am glad it was for my daughter 🙂 Happy stitching and bless your work!

Very best thoughts for your uncle; have just passed through this stage at our house, too. And I love the stripes – quilt or wild pants, it’ll work!

I’m sure your quilt will be great! Love the stripes!!

What if you sewed the strips together so that the dark/lighter pieces were staggered… so you’d get a rectangular checkerboard…
I think it would be great with simple straight line quilting with a walking foot 1/4″ on the side of each seam.
I love it! I think it’s going to be beautiful when you are done!
Oh- Happy Bloggy Birthday- I never got over here to wish it to you!!

Most of my quilts go something like this…never quite how I imagined or I never really had a plan to begin with. 🙂 You know we’ll love the finished product though. A handmade quilt can’t be bad. Looking forward to seeing it!

I love the City weekend with the brown Anna! I have two of the charm packs myself and after seeing it in person, was unsure of what to do with it. You’ve definitely got my creative juices flowing now!
