lizzy house spring coat

You probably saw this one coming.  I’m sure you understand if you’ve got two kids of the same gender to sew for, once one sees something you’ve made, the other one without a doubt – wants one too.
And even though it’s twice the work, it makes me happy to know that they have just as much fun with it as I do.

So after Natalie’s spring coat, I made Emily one!

I cut into this super cute print from Lizzy House (part of her Red Letter Day collection), it’s too cute not to use for a little coat.
The lining is Pure Elements by Patricia Bravo, just like Natalie’s was, but in this springy green color (Light Citron).
I added the contrasting strips at the bottom and around the hood, similar to the patchwork strips on Natalie’s.  I had a few questions on the first coat so I’ll answer them here:  I used regular quilting weight cotton for the coat, no interfacing (as the pattern calls for).  The only reason I didn’t use it was because I didn’t have enough on hand and I think the coats turned out fine without it.  And I think it’s the perfect weight for a spring coat. As for the contrasting strips, I just folded up the bottom of the pattern to make the cuts of the main fabric and then cut strips for the contrasting bands.  Once I was done sewing them together I opened up the pattern piece and trimmed it all down to fit the pattern piece.  And yes, this would be an awesome pattern to use some laminated cotton with, it would make such a cute raincoat.
And I just wanted to stop and say thank you to my friends and readers, I appreciate you all so much. I’ve been spending some time simplifying things for blogging and around my house and I feel really good about the changes – still room for improvement though!  Here’s to spring!

Now go swing and have a wonderful weekend!

If I had a coat that cute I’d be wearing every chance I got and definitely swinging. Perhaps in yellow gumboots too. I don’t think I’d look undignified would I?

  6. I was wondering when the second coat would come along. The fabrics are adorable. I have some of the contrast fabric… I immediately loved it when I saw it at the store a while back, but I haven’t used it yet.

Just wanted to let you know that I just finished a marathon sewing spree thanks to your 241 pattern. I made 7 totes for mother’s day — one for each (5) of my girls — one for my sister — and one for my mother! My pattern is getting worn out, but I absolutely adore that pattern! Thanks for sharing it and so many other fabulous projects with the rest of us. – Suzanne

I’ve always had to do the same thing with two daughters 19 months apart! Two of everything, similar but different enough to tell them apart! It’s only now that they’re older that they are happy to get different things.

That coat is adorable – love the fabric choices – and so is the little sweetie pie swinging in her coat. My daughters are 2 years, 4 months apart and I used to sew them matching dresses when they were little. You can never make something for one that the other doesn’t want!

  35. the.mrs says:

Cuuuute! Love the leggings too! Homemade?

  36. wow! you’ve been busy 🙂 The coat is precious and looks SO WELL MADE! I also have two girs, so I hear you on the requests for everything the same! You just cannot make only one … Sara
