floating shelves: creative space

I’ve been doing a little rearranging in the sewing room since this summer.  I don’t know, I guess I’m a little restless, but I love the change. The girls seemed like they were outgrowing their Ikea table and stools, so I wanted to search out something that would work and grow with them.

We have this nook in the sewing room where I had my armoir with all my clothes in it, and I was tired of it not functioning like I needed it to.  It just took up too much room and didn’t suit my needs.  So I sold it on craigslist, man, I do love selling things on there, it’s fun!

It took forever to come up with a reasonably cost effective solution for the shelves.  Countertop pieces that length were crazy expensive and I didn’t think I could pull off making floating shelves that size.  So of course I looked and found ikea floating shelves that were *almost* the right length, for cheap.  Yes please.

But that didn’t solve the desktop issue.  We ended up making it!  Just sandwiched two pieces of plywood together, glued and screwed together, added a 1×2 for a facing and painted it.  It’s great!  We just used some cleats on the sides and back of the desktop to support it.  Now I just need to get motivated to wax the darn thing so it can be protected.

Only problem is that the girls love it and use it all the time!  Good problem to have.  I had scored the little chairs at an estate sale over the summer, not sure if I’ll paint them or leave them as is, but they’re the perfect size and really sturdy.  There’s another little goodie I just bought for the room,  I’m excited to share it!  Soon!

  1. Wow, that looks so bright and beautiful. What a great space! I love making changes like that too. It’s exciting to remake spaces so that they really serve.

  2. Anna your solution is perfection! What a great way to make the best use of the space. I too find my 8,6, & 5 year old are outgrowing the ‘little kid tables and chairs’ and SO ready for an upsize. Love how you made it work in a cost effective way.

  5. I love that little nook ! Your girls are so adorable too.
You know what would be cute to protect the surface… Oilcloth. You could just staple it underneath the table. Then take it off if you ever don’t want it again.

I would love to do something like this at our house – but I lack the wonderful nook. It looks bright and lovely – no wonder your daughters are inspired!

looks great. my kids are still crammed into their ikea table and chairs. we have the rectangle version of what you had. They 8yo is much too big to be sitting there, but its all we have room for.

I can never keep my shelves that clear though, I need a big clean out.. too much junk! Inspired to sort it out now, thanks 🙂

  22. What a lovely nook! We have those same shelves in our living room, they do look good, although I can never get my head round floating shelves! They chairs look beautiful just as they are. It must be the time of year, there seem to be lots of blog posts about decorating, decluttering and rearranging just now.
