My First Mittens!

You guys, I’m so excited!  I made mittens!  I’ve been busy scouring patterns and yarns and reading and re-reading instructions.  I finally found these Warmest Mittens pattern on Ravelry and just started!  They were awesome.  I had a great time making them.  Once I made one, I easily finished the second in a day or so.  I’m gearing up to make more, this time with a different yarn maybe.

I had gotten the Malabrigo from Eat. Sleep. Knit. as part of their free goodies program.  I love the color!  I think for next time I’ll pick a yarn with more ply to it?  I had finished these just in time for my mom to take them on her trip to Wyoming.  She said they were really great.  Warm and comfy.  They did come back a little worse for wear.  The pills!  Oh the pills!  I haven’t been knitting long enough to know that this happens and it’s okay (had to confirm it with Shannon).  Just need to get a little lint shaver and it’ll look better I hope.

Okay, well, I need to hop to it and figure out what pair of mittens I’ll be making for me!  yay!  Just in time before winter is over (hopefully!).

  1. Pick a color of yarn that will go with your Easter dress!

They are so great. Malabrigo tends to pill, but it’s so worth it as the yarn is a dream. I have a vest knit out of it that pills like crazy but my lint shaver helps a lot. The best way to combat pilling before it happens is to knit it at a tight gauge!

For pills, try a two blade razor. Works wonders! My daughter in law makes mittens out of wool clothing . She buys them at thrift stores, and because they’ve been washed already…the fabric is tight/dense making it hard for the wind to go through them!

Get one of those sweater shavers (I just got a new one off of amazon) – they make all the difference! The mitts look great, Anna!

    So, so lovely!
In Germany you could not use them at the moment. We have 16°C-20°C the last days.

    Greetings Ines♥

Very nice! Now, did you design the pattern for the lovely coat that you are wearing in this post? If not, who did 🙂 ?

yay mittens! and yes, the more plies a yarn has the more it will resist pilling. Also softer yarns pill more. my favorites are lined mittens with a hardy outer yarn in a basic wool and a warm soft yarn like cashmere for the lining.

Still needing mittens many days here in WY! 🙂

These are beautiful! Gorgeous yarn colour. Some yarns do pill more than others, but I like to think that items that have pilled have just been worn a lot and well-loved!

Yay! Mitts! I still have the ones my Mom made me nearly 40 years ago!

Great job on the mittens. Just chiming in that Malabrigo is infamous for pilling. It is not a “hard wearing” yarn, though of course soft and quite pretty. (Six years working in my LYS means I saw a lot of Malabrigo pilling!)
