screen printing

I had the opportunity to attend a screen printing class at Home Ec Workshop in Iowa City, Iowa a couple weekends ago.  It was such a blast to learn this new skill! I’ve always been somewhat intimidated by the process of screen printing, so it was really great to learn in a hands-on classroom setting.  I’d definitely recommend checking around your local area to see what fun classes might be near you!  There’s also some pretty great online classes you could check out too.  Here’s one on CreativeBug that I watched after taking my in-person class.

Jeni and Deedee were great to share in the fun.  I loved seeing what they made.  Plus we got to hang out and eat at some fun places.  Oh, and build some amazing stacks of fabric with Deedee’s stash.

Codi (the Home Ec Workshop owner) was a blast.  They offer so many awesome classes and I secretly wanted to move in.  It’s honestly a dream shop: fabric, yarn, a workspace for classes and even a coffee/snacks area!  Told you, a dream.

I even picked up these cute ‘handmade by’ cards.  Aren’t they cute?  I get to use one for the quilt I just made.

I’m so glad you got to stop at Home Ec. I love that shop. I stop there whenever I’m in Iowa City. I sell some of my tissue cozies there. We have a nice fabric and yarn shop in Des Moines, too, but Home Ec is so cozy.

Agreed, Home Ec is a great shop and one of the reasons I love IC!

How fun! I love screen printing, but it makes such a mess. Maybe now that it’s summer, I’ll set up outside…

Coming from 10+ years of screenprinting experience, duct tape to frame out your screen is a bad idea. Painters tape is better. The adhesive on duct tape is too strong, and can eventually eat through the silk. Painters tape is easily removable, which will make cleaning out your screen between ink color changes much easier.

I sooo want to make my own fabric via screen printing. Heck, even stamping… How fun. And, I love the simplicity of the white flowers you made- they would be perfect for so many things.

Have you seen the Prints Charming book Sew Charming? They use paper stencils – I think to make it a bit more “doable” for people that might just want to dabble and see if they like it.

Fun stuff! You made a versatile, cute design. I have to imagine all my crafts with added cat hair/paw prints so I haven’t tried screen printing yet. : ) I’m going to look for a class right now.

I did a screen printing class a couple of years ago and fell in love, but haven’t had a chance to have a go again since, I love what you made!

  10. Beautiful results. We did little screen printing many years ago in high school but have recently been hankering after trying my hand at it again….

  11. What fun! Love the prints you made and that shop looks so cool!

I took a screen printing class in January, I am totally hooked and invested in some screens and ink. Just a new dimension to quilting.

  17. Screenprinting definitely has the potential to become addictive. I bought a Yudu machine a few years ago when they were all the rage and (when I have it working just right) I’ve had a lot of fun with it!

Love those simple little flowers. My husband always talks about how he used to do screen printing when he was a kid and loved it. Maybe I should motivate him to finally teach me and our little guys.
