Yayyyy! It feels like so long since I’ve finished sewing anything lately. And this one makes me feel really good. Isn’t a great feeling to snip that last thread tail and pop something on that you made? Geez I forgot how much I love it. Thanks to April for asking me to join in on her Popover Poncho tour, I made this rockin’ poncho. I seriously love it and I’m almost certain I would have gotten things to make it and then never actually sew the darn thing! A shame that would’ve been. It’s such a great project you can sew up in just a couple hours. Even if you’ve never made a garment before I think you can walk away from this pattern with a successful finish. That’s pretty awesome in itself.
I admittedly had no awesome fabric in my stash for making said poncho. I truly wanted to spend half my mortgage buying gorgeous Pendleton wool, but couldn’t bite the bullet. Instead I scoured the internet and found this fun black and white plaid coating from Fabric Mart. I hadn’t shopped there before. They do have really great descriptions of their fabrics, so it was easy to narrow down a few nice fabrics that I could use.
Before finding the plaid I came across a few others that would’ve fit the bill too. I’m sharing them here just in case you want to check them out for yourself:
1. Spicy Dijon Wool & Cashmere Coating //2. Black/Dove Gray Pebbled Coating //3. Navy/black Peacoat //4. You-Say-Tomato Wool & Mohair Boucle //5. Teal Wool/Cashmere Blend Coating //6. Navy Windowpane Check Wool Blend Coating //7. Bright Pink/Grayhound Striped Coating //8. Natural Alpaca Wool Blend Coating
And speaking of fabric, Grainline Studio has a great post about working with Wool Coating, awesome helpful stuff there.
The pattern is clear and easy to follow. I think the sizing is great. I have pretty wide shoulders and went with the size large and LOVE it. I can totally throw this on with some jeans and look way cooler than I really am.
Pattern: Popover Poncho by April Rhodes, or find a paper copy at one of April’s stockists
Fabric: Wool/acrylic blend coating from Fabric Mart, Robert Kaufman Yarn Dyed Essex (of course!) for the cowl lining and bias finished hem.
Size: Large
PS. I was given this pattern for review, all opinions are my own. Oh, and I’ll be giving away a paper copy of this pattern over on Instagram later today!
Awesome! Looks like your new winter staple. So comfy and warm. Looks like it would be a pretty easy sew for a garment. I might just give it a try.
oh you’re pretty cool Anna!!
This looks like something I could both sew and would want to wear – a rare and lovely combination 🙂 Looks great on you!
That is cool!
oh it’s great. i love your style, anna!!
Lovely. Yours is the prettiest one I’ve seen yet.
I love your poncho. I love the idea of using a warm coat fabric for it. And I just saw the pattern includes plus size. I am seriously considering giving this pattern a try. I’ve never successfully made a garment before. So we’ll see.

Very cute.
realllly cute, and pretty pretty pictures!!
OK! I have seen some really like, but yours is the best! Love it! I don’t know how tall you are, but did you add to the length? several other testers said it was a bit too short for them.
Love your fabric choice! This is a great pattern.
I love the location you picked to shoot these pics! So so so gorgeous! And the poncho is great too, so nice for fall. <3

I think you need to make Natalie a matching poncho now. It will be perfect for her cast. 🙂
Oh my gosh, I’ve never wanted to make something so urgently, it looks so cozy. Although it might also be because I am freezing cold right now, either way – good job 🙂
Aha! I have some wool blend fabric that is almost “coming of age”.Your poncho looks great and as it’s Summer here that gives me plenty of time to make one of these before the cold weather arrives :).
I love it Anna and I totally believe you are cooler thank you think you are *wink*
I am going to make this for my sister for Christmas. I was waiting for an idea to float in and here it is! Just a little tight on time!
I finished it by Christmas for my sister in a boiled wool. It turned out great!
This is thoroughly gorgeous, Anna. I never wore a poncho back when 🙂 but you’ve convinced me to try this one. It’s so elegant. LOVE IT!!
OMG now I HAVE to make one of these! I might even make a Twinkie of yours!
Love the fabric choice here!
Hi Anna,
your poncho looks so good, it fits so well. The ones I’ve found so far are simply too short and don’t cover my arms.
Thanks a lot for this inspiration.
you look beautiful in that poncho! it suits you.. I tried one on at target and I looked like a water buffalo!
Love your fabric choice! This is a great pattern. thanks fir share.
Paid for the e-pattern, printed the directions but was unable to print the pattern pieces. After opening it only twice, the site was expired. In spite of multiple emails for help, never received a response. So disappointing.
I have the same problem Joan
Is this pattern available in paper…not email. Thank you!!
It’s not my pattern, but you could ask the designer, April Rhodes (her shop should be linked in the post).
